[Invitation for Expression of Interest- Deadline 7 July 2021]

We are inviting expressions of interest (EoI) for commercializing “A Robotic System for Performing Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection” technology.  The innovation is developed by Professor Philip Chiu, Department of Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Reference: 14/MED/562).

The Technology

Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is an effective treatment for early gastric and colorectal cancers. Compared to open surgery, mucosal resection performed with an endoscope is clearly less invasive. ESD is a technically challenging procedure with the limits of current flexible endoscopes. With a single small instrument channel to an endoscopy, an operator relies on torque of scope tip and accessories such as a cap attached to the tip of the endoscope to perform dissection. The lack of dexterity to retract tissues and a single arm operation are suboptimal. Therefore, a robotic system that can operate with two arms and with improved ergonomics and dexterity to assist surgeons in performing this procedure is highly demanded.

This robotic system features two motor-driven surgical instruments which are inserted into an endoscopic platform. An optimal design of these robotic arms requires the use of shape memory alloy (SMA) and metal wire actuators to develop an improved actuation mechanism. These enable force to be transmitted to the distal tip of the robotic arms and an efficient tissue dissection. A remote console with a 3-layered software allows users to precisely control the robotic arms.

Commercialization

The technology is now available for licensing on an exclusive basis.  In order to fully realize the benefit of the technology, we expect substantial investment is necessary to enable further research and development.  In addition to the financial commitment, the licensee is expected to have the appropriate expertise as well as plans in marketing and strategizing the end product to ensure successful transfer of the technology to the society.  Previous or existing business involvement and experience in this area is a plus.

This invitation of expression of interest is without prejudice.  We also stress that this invitation is not a tender, and the University is not bound to accept any offer, or to accept the highest monetary offer, as there are additional considerations (such as the widest possible benefit to the community) that we, as a public institution, will need to take into consideration.
